Vet Surgeon

Aug 30

Veterinary Post

With one of our vets planning his retirement, we are looking for a new vet to join our team. This mixed vet position would be an excellent opportunity for someone looking for a genuinely mixed post with a bias in farm work or for a farm post. We pride ourselves in having a very good support network and run regular clinical club meetings for vets. This role would be suitable for an experienced vet or for a new graduate who would be mentored, supported and enrolled on the XLVets new graduate programme. We are looking for an enthusiastic person who is a good communicator and will fit in well with our team.

Staff

At present we have nine vets in the practice - three are directors in the business, most are full time assistants and we have two part time assistants. We also have a small animal vet starting in August. The share of the work at present equates to three vets working on small animals each day with the rest involved mainly in farm animal work. Our office hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 5.00pm on Saturdays. We have a unique rota system where each mixed vet does a week on call at a time (Saturday to Friday) with time off during the day Monday to Friday. This means weeks at a time with no on call. During spring time however, we also have a second vet on call and we split weekends for the ‘first on call’ vet during the busiest weeks when calving and lambing is at its peak.

Living and working in Orkney

Although Orkney is a group of Islands off the northern tip of Scotland, we do not consider it remote. We have many flights per day to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Inverness; quite a few options per day to sail by one of the 3 ferries to Caithness at the north of Scotland (Stromness to Scrabster in Thurso, St Margarets Hope to Gills Bay or Burwick in South Ronaldsay to John o Groats). A ferry travels from Kirkwall down to Aberdeen and up to Shetland a few times per week too. Geographically the Islands are mostly flat and green with well maintained A roads. You are also never far away from a beach, so sea swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing etc is popular. Orkney is a very safe place to live with a great community spirit. The main island is referred to as ‘the mainland’ and here you will find Tescos, Lidl, the Co-op, M&Co as well as many local shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. The Pickaquoy Centre, locally known as 'Picky', is recognised as a first class sports, arts, conference and social facility. It includes Orkney's largest cinema, two pools, a cafe, fitness classes, badminton courts, climbing wall, kids holiday camp, soft play, room hire and more. It has hosted world class arts festivals, music events, exhibitions, conferences and sports competitions. The Centre also includes a high quality campsite with some of the best facilities in Scotland. We have many clubs for sports, art, music and festivals etc so there is plenty to see and do. Although Orkney is small with a population of 22,400 there is everything here that you can possibly need, all condensed in a relatively small area. Orkney is a great place to bring up a family with excellent schools where all children have access to PE, art, music and instrumental tuition. There is also lots for kids to do locally. Although we are ideally looking for afull-timee vet, apart-timee position would also be considered for those with family.

Remuneration package, holidays and CPD We offer a generous remuneration package which is dependent on qualifications / experience. A car and accommodation can be provided by the practice. CPD is encouraged and funded, the majority via XLVets of which we are members, and we like to invite trainers to come up to the practice to run group CPD for vets. We also fund RCVS, VDS and BVA membership. Medical and dental insurance is provided and local ‘Active life’ gym membership is also on offer. Holiday entitlement is 26 days per annum plus two days at Christmas and two days at New Year although there will be a share of on call over this period.
