A RVN is required at an independent mixed veterinary practice dealing with small animal, equine, and large animal clients.

 The team consists of ten Veterinary Surgeons, a Practice Manager, five Veterinary Nurses, an Animal Care Assistant, a Veterinary Care Assistant and ten administration staff are presently employed in the practice. Due to one of our nurses planning her retirement, there is an opportunity for a new nurse to our team. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Theatre & Preparation room

·     Preparation of theatre, preparation area, equipment and patient

·     Pre, peri and immediate postoperative care

·     Assistance with induction of anaesthesia and maintenance of anaesthesia

·     Assistance during surgical procedures

·     General maintenance of hygiene and equipment in and around the theatre

·     Sterilising of equipment, cleaning floors, emptying bins etc

·     Dispensing of post op treatments / medications

·     Charging up of operations


·     Nursing of patients

·     Admission and discharge of patients including completion of forms

·     Drug administration under direction of Veterinary Surgeon

·     Updating case histories, charging of hospitalisation

·     General hygiene of kennel area

·     Washing of bedding, towels etc

·     Bagging up of clinical waste and bodies to go away for cremation / disposal

Nurse Consultations & Clinics

·     Pre and post op checks, bandage changes

·     Puppy and kitten checks / weight clinics / parasite control

·     Assisting vets in consulting room as required

·     Assisting vets on home visits as required


·     Preparation of equipment and patient

·     Assistance with and performance of radiography procedures

·     Processing of radiographs including recording saving and sending to file

·     Maintenance and care of equipment

·     Radiation badges


·     Obtain skin, urine and blood samples and sample examination

·     Routine biochemistry and haematology

·     Maintenance and care of analysers

·     Packing and sending of samples to laboratories

·     Disposal of samples post testing and maintenance of clean and tidy dispensary

·     Updating of lab record book


·     Answering the phone & routing calls

·     Dealing with clients when they arrive for appointments / over-the-counter sales / enquiries

·     Making appointments for consultations and operations

·     Processing payments and invoices, handling cash

·     Filing & Word Processing

·     Dealing with incoming & outgoing mail (use of franking machine)

·     Arranging visits for vets, appointments, and travel for vets when required

·     Maintaining records

·     Assisting with the dispensing of medicines and drugs under supervision

·     Making up parcels - medicines for clients on the outer isles or specimens to laboratories

·     Dealing with emergency situations

·     Maintenance of waiting room and reception

·     Stock control where required and making sure the area is clean and tidy

·     Opening up the office in the morning and closing up in the evening

·     Setting up the transfer of incoming calls to the vet on duty in the evening and the reverse of this procedure in the morning

·     Assistance with other tasks as reasonably requested eg vaccination reminders, insurance claims etc



·    Clinical supervisor to student veterinary nurse and trainee veterinary care assistants

Hours of work

Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm with one afternoon off per week, plus Saturday mornings as per the rota (at the moment approximately 1 in 6).   Due to the nature of the job, flexibility with these hours is appreciated.


The salary is negotiable depending on qualification and experience. Salaries are paid monthly in arrears by BACS. We pay the annual veterinary nurse registration fees and CPD is encouraged and funded. We provide medical insurance, dental insurance and local ‘active life’ gym membership. Hours worked beyond 37.5 per week are considered overtime and are paid at one and a half times basic hourly rate.


These are 26 days per year and we are closed for two days at Christmas and two days at New Year.
